The History of Our EM

  • 1996 - Cryoton is approached by Scottish directional drilling company IDS with a request to develop a quantum magnetometer receiver for downhole telemetry. First electromagnetic noise measurements at the drilling site.
  • 1997-98 - Cryoton is appointed main consultant at EU project (THERMIE). During the project, a magnetic and electrical receiver and a concept of a downhole transmitter are developed.
  • Field-testing demonstrates the ability of the Cryoton magnetic receiver to record signals from the Geoservice (later Computalog) EM transmitter.

Separate EM-telemetry field tests of the first Cryoton-designed EM system undertaken in Lincolnshire, UK. Tests are successful, with a clearly recorded telemetry signal, at a location where standard EM is not possible because of a 300-m thick non-conductive anhydrite layer above the oil reservoir depth.

  • 1999-2000 - Cryoton is awarded two European grants (SMART and SPUR) through the Welsh Development Agency.
  • As a result we develop efficient downhole power transmitter electronics, and apply for a downhole telemetry patent. Sophisticated theoretical modelling allows accurate prediction of telemetry signal strength.

  • 2000 - Management repurchases Cryoton shares from Weatherford US who acquired the assets of our Scottish partner IDS.
  • 2002/3 - Cryoton creates a next-level commercial EM-MWD system ordered by Canadian directional drilling company NEWSCO.
  • The mechanical design of the system is supported by experienced downhole tool design engineers. User friendly operation and interface to standard rig EDR and remote terminals is added to the system

  • 2004/5 - The Cryoton EM system is upgraded following extensive field operation by the customer. Proprietary "Depth Booster" technique is introduced. Mechanical system reliability is greatly improved. A new talk-back feature allowing on-the-run reprogramming of the telemetry data is implemented. A sleep mode is added, increasing battery life.
